Radwanska, who is the No. 2 seed in the tournament, got off to a slightly shaky start after enjoying a bye straight into the second round.

Fresh from winning the Korea Open in Seoul on Sunday, the Krakow-born player nearly bungled the first set.

Going 1-4 down in the tie-break against Wozniak, who is currently No. 376 in the WTA rankings compared with Radwanska at No. 4, she eventually came back to win 7-5.

However, Radwanska dug her heels in during the second set, powering through without losing a single game.

Radwanska won the Toray Pan Pacific Open two years ago, although this year the number one seed is Victoria Azarenka from Belarus.

Meanwhile, the Polish star's younger sister Urszula lost her first round encounter in Tokyo, being defeated by Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 3-6, 3-6. (nh)
