Despite finishing sixth in the 2012/2013 Ekstraklasa season, Polonia Warszawa had been unable to avoid relegation owing to financial debts, with former club chairman Ireneusz Krol ultimately filing for the club's bankruptcy in June.
However, a huge turnout for the team's first fourth league encounter demonstrated that the club has nothing to fear where fan loyalty is concerned.
Fans unfurled a huge banner with the slogan: “Polonia will never die,” (Polonia nigdy nie zginie).
Michal Stralkowski found the back of the net three times for his side during Sunday's match, complemented by one apiece from Jacek Kosmalski, Marcin Kur and Edgar Ghazaryan.
The Warsaw club remains confident about its ultimate return to Ekstraklasa, although it will take a minimum of four years to achieve this.
