Fajdek strikes gold in hammer throw

Pawel Fajdek took Poland's first medal at the World Athletic Championships in Moscow on Monday when he won gold in the men's hammer throw.

The 24 year-old Fajdek's winning throw of 81.97 meters, which came in the first round, beat Olympic champion Krisztian Pars of Hungary, who threw 80.30 meters, into second place.

Lukas Melich of the Czech Republic took the bronze.

After the competition, Fajdek thanked “all those who kept their fingers crossed for me and believed in me”.

The medal ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday. (pg)
