The 22 year-old Pole seemed untroubled that he was in his first ever grand slam semi final and his huge serve caused problems for Murray in the first set, which Janowicz eventually won in the tie break 7 - 2.

But Janiwicz began the second set with a double fault and the Scot, playing in front of his home crowd, began to dominate, taking the second set and then the third, winning the last five games in a row.

During the third set, Janowicz could be heard asking the umpire “when exactly the roof will be closed” as the light started to fade late on Friday evening.

Andy Murray then lost his temper when it was announced at the end of the third set that play would be suspended until the roof was put over Centre Court.

“You are only doing this now because he [Janowicz] has been complaining about it for the last 45 minutes,” a furious US Open champion said.

The break did not change Janowicz's fading fortunes, however, and Murray took the fourth set 6 – 3, ending the Pole's dream run at this year's Wimbledon.

“He's strong and unpredictable,” Murray - who now plays Novak Djokovic after he beat Juan Martin del Potro after five sets in the other semi final - said of his opponent, the first Polish man to reach a grand slam semi final in tennis history. (pg)
