Kawecki set a new championship record in the final, clocking in at 1:48.51, shaving 11 split seconds off the previous record made by Russian Stanislav Donets during the 2009 games in Turkey.
The Pole also had the pleasure in breaking his own – and his country's – record in the event, slashing his previous best of 1:49.13.
Hungary's Peter Bernek came in second behind Kawecki at 1:49.41, and France's Ben Stasiulius took bronze at 1:51.81, delighting the home crowd in Chartres.
The European Short Course Championships run until 25 November. (nh)
