The 27 year-old picked up a broken ankle – which will put him out of both the World Cup qualifier with England on 16 October and the friendly against South Africa on 12 October - in the 37th minute during Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga away match against Hannover 96 at the AWD-Arena this weekend, which ended in a 1 – 1 draw.

The injury to his ankle will keep him off the pitch for between 4 and 6 weeks, it has been estimated.

Poland’s national team coach now has a problem as to who will fill Jakub Błaszczykowski’s boots in midfield during the match with England in Warsaw.

The relatively inexperienced Waldemar Sobota and Kamil Grosicki have been named by Polish media as two potential choices.

Poland are currently joint top in Group H with England and Montenegro after two matches. (pg)
