The two victims, a man and a woman, were both members of a polar expedition organised by the Warsaw-based Institute of Geophysics, part of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), the IAR news agency reported, citing the institute's website.

According to the mojanorwegia.pl website, both victims worked for a Polish research station.

The mojanorwegia.pl website cited Norwegian authorities as saying that the Polish researchers died as a result of falling down from a height of several hundred metres in Spitsbergen’s Hornsund fjord area.

The deaths are being investigated by Norwegian police, the Polish public broadcaster’s news agency reported.
