"I received with great sadness the news of more than 40 people who lost their lives as a result of a plane fire during an emergency landing at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport,” Duda said in a message of condolence to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Polish head of state added: “I offer my condolences to all the affected and the families of the victims.”

The message was posted on the president’s website on Monday.

A Sukhoi Superjet 100 plane operated by Russian airline Aeroflot burst into flames after making a hard emergency landing in Moscow on Sunday, an accident that killed 41 of the 78 people on board, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.

Investigators were looking into possible causes for the crash, including equipment failure, inclement weather and pilot error, according to media reports.
