US, EU congratulate Poles on Constitution Day

The United States and the European Commission have congratulated Poland on the anniversary of the adoption of its landmark constitution of May 3, 1791.

Poland on Friday marked Constitution Day, a public holiday celebrating the historic constitution.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement: “On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I extend my congratulations and best wishes to the people of Poland on the occasion of your 228th Constitution Day.”

The statement, posted on the State Department’s website, added: “Widely regarded as one of the first modern constitutions in Europe, the May Third Constitution represented an historic landmark in your country’s pursuit of freedom and democracy.”

Meanwhile, the European Commission wrote on Twitter: “Happy Constitution Day, Poland!”

Top Polish officials were on Friday set to attend high-profile ceremonies to mark the day.
