The foreign ministry said the injured Poles were in hospital. Earlier, the ministry said two Polish citizens had been hurt. Polish President Andrzej Duda said the two were customs officers on a working trip abroad.

The explosions in Brussels killed over 30 people. Dozens of others were injured. A Belgian prosecutor said a suicide bomber is believed to have carried out one of the attacks.

Security at Polish airports has been stepped up, while LOT Polish Airlines diverted a flight from Warsaw bound for the Belgian capital to Dusseldorf in Germany.

After a meeting of the Government Security Centre, Prime Minister Beata Szydło said that "at the moment, Poland is a safe country.”

She added: "All the services are working, they are ready, there will be heightened checks where they should be carried out, in transport hubs, railway stations, at airports, so that you feel safe."

President Duda called for solidarity with Belgium, saying: “We have to stand together to defend our European values, in defence of our cultural foundations.”

He added: “We cannot allow ourselves to be defeated even by brutal violence."

Duda earlier tweeted that "war on terror is our common duty."
