The “values of freedom are questioned today by terrorism, by rising populist movements and the far-right across Europe,” French PM Valls said during a visit at the European Solidarity Centre in the city of Gdańsk in the north of the country.

Gdańsk is the birthplace of the Solidarity movement which was key to the fall of Communism in the country.

The French PM expressed his concern that terrorism is an important issue in EU unity, and the two countries should have the same voice on the subject.

“It is important that two great countries, Poland and France, speak out loud about this in Europe.”

A terrorist group in early January wreaked havoc in France, killing a total of 12 in Paris and other towns.

But terrorism was not the only subject on the agenda.

Following a meeting with the French PM, Pomorskie Province Assembly deputy Speaker Ryszard Świlski, the Polish official said that the two discussed “the future construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland and France's involvement in energy security building.”

On Thursday, PM Valls will meet his Polish counterpart Ewa Kopacz as well as Polish President Bronisław Komorowski in the country's capital Warsaw.

Counter-terrorism exercises were held in Warsaw on Wednesday night. (rg)
