Although the number of automobiles stolen in 2014 declined compared with the previous year, the figures were still considerable.

Of the around 14,100 cars taken, Volkswagen Golfs and Audi A4s were the most popular. Other models of car most stolen by thieves was the VW Passat and Audi A6.

“Car thieves commonly use computers to steal cars, such software significantly reduces the time it takes to steal a car,'' an expert told the Polish Press Agency.

''This is one of the reasons for their expertise in specific brands.

''Luxury cars are often stolen following an earlier break-in at an apartment or house. Thieves then take keys and documents.''

Not surprisingly most vehicles were stolen in or around Warsaw. Just under 3,000 cars were reported stolen there in 2014. The safest was the city of Kielce. (rg)
