Poland has nominated Mikolaj Dowgielewicz, current Secretary of State for European Affairs, for the post of deputy governor of the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB).
Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski submitted Dowgielewicz's candidacy on behalf of the government, according to the Rzeczpospolita daily.
It is being speculated that Poland can count on the support of Germany in its bid to secure the post, although the candidate himself told the newspaper that “at this stage I would not like to comment on this information.”
Dowgielewicz recently organised the six-month Polish Presidency of the European Union Council (1 July-31 December 2011).
He has several years experience with EU institutions, serving as the European Commission spokesman for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy (2004-2007), before working in the cabinet of then Vice-President of the EC, Margot Wallstrom.
Founded in 1956, with the original aim of helping people displaced by the 2nd World War, the CEB has evolved into a development bank that grants loans to EU member states. (nh/pg)
