Poland overtook Romania into second spot from a previous Eurostat ranking.

Poles working abroad – mainly in the EU - sent home about euro 2.7 billion in 2010. By comparison Spaniards sent home almost euro 5.4 billion.

In net terms – the difference between Poles’ earnings repratriation and that of foreigners working in Poland – Poland was in top spot, at euro 2.68 billion.

The central bank (NBP) – using differently methodology than Eurostat – published figures showing that money coming into Poland from Poles working abroad in the first three quarters of 2011 was 8.3 billion zlotys (about euro 1.9 billion), 10 percent down year-on-year and 20 percent down on the same period of 2009.

The effects of German labour market opening to Poles – and other CEE countries – in 2010 are yet to be seen.(jh)
