A new report expected to be published at the end of the month from the Polish Geological Institute shows that shale in the country may contain oil as well as gas.

Unofficially, experts have said that shale oil could cover one third of Poland’s needs within the next ten years.

Geologists have pointed to three areas in Poland where oil could be extracted on an industrial scale: eastern Pomerania, in the south-eastern reaches of the Mazovian region along the border with the Lublin province, as well as the Subcarpathian region.

While the oil is reported to be within the same shale deposits which contain gas, the oil is at a higher level in the ground, even visible on the surface at times.

However, such oil extraction would not necessarily be cheaper than fracking for gas, experts comment. (jb)
