A modest increase in the number of millionaires in Poland is being cautiously cited as a sign that the effects of the international financial crisis are dying down.
2009 was the year that knocked the wind out of the sails of some entrepreneurs, partly due to the fact that many businesses had invested on the global stock markets, thus getting caught up in the international crisis.
Tax declarations covering 2009 revealed that compared to 2008, almost 3000 less people had earned in excess of 1 million zloty (250,000 euro).
In 2010, close to 12,000 crossed the 1 million mark, showing a slight increase of 230 compared with 2009.
Interestingly, although Warsaw, Krakow and Katowice remain strongholds of wealth, the most new arrivals emerged in smaller localities this year.
Tax returns covering Bydgoszcz and the surrounding Kuyavian-Pomeranian province saw 580 people cross the 1 million mark in their earnings for 2010, as opposed to 543 from 2009.
Likewise, people are returning to the stock exchange, with almost 21,124 taxpayers from the aforementioned region declaring revenues from the sale of securities for 2010, almost doubling the amount from 2009 (13,324). (nh/jb)
