Troubled A2 construction opened up to other contractors

Two construction firms, Eurovia Consortium and Warbud SA have been invited to negotiate terms for the completion of the troubled A2 highway, which was abandoned last month by COVEC, a Chinese company.
The announcement was made by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways after it annulled the COVEC contract at the end of June.
After the Chinese firm had problems with keeping to its budget, COVEC ultimately had to abandon works after negotiations with the Directorate fell through over the financial issues.
Now the Directorate has offered the construction works for a 29-kilometre section of the A2 to the two companies, with technical consultations still being undertaken on a further 20-kilometre stretch of the highway, which is to link Warsaw with the central city of Lodz.
Consultations over the construction of the A2 are expected to be finalised by means of negotiations with Eurovia and Warbud, with the Directorate hoping that construction will recommence on the highway later this month.
If construction did recommence in July, the road may still have a chance of being opened for the Euro 2012 football championships. (jb)
