PM lauds Poland’s economic ‘mini-miracle’

Mapping out his vision of the country’s future in a wide-ranging speech at a conference entitled “Poland, the Great Project,” Morawiecki said the government had tried in recent years to put the country on a fast “track to modernity.”

He told the gathering in Warsaw that, according to a recent OECD report, Poland would have the fastest-growing economy in the next two years among 36 countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

He argued that Poland’s ruling conservatives had also restored basic social justice.

The OECD recently upgraded its forecast for Poland's 2019 GDP growth to 4.2 percent from 4.0 percent expected earlier.

In a May projection, the OECD also upped its 2020 GDP forecast for Poland to 3.5 percent from 3.3 percent.

Friday’s conference in Warsaw was expected to bring together 1,300 participants, including politicians, academics and entrepreneurs.

Topics up for debate included challenges faced by agriculture, the development of Central Europe as part of the European Union, key aims for Polish foreign policy, and the future of young Poles who have emigrated.

Morawiecki told the meeting he believed "that we will be able to re-build a state that will be a great homeland for Poles, for all who live here with us, who share our values, that we will be able to inspire the whole of Europe, and maybe even the world, with these values."
