There were nearly 304,000 parents behind in child support payments at the end of March 2019, according to BIG InfoMonitor, a firm that collects data about debt.

The amount of arrears increased, however, to PLN 11.89 billion in the first quarter of 2019 year on year from PLN 11.64 billion (EUR 2.71 bn, USD 3.04 bn).

The average amount of maintenance arrears due stands at PLN 39,145, up from PLN 36,958 year on year, BIG InfoMonitor said.

The record-holder owes over PLN 800,000 to his or her children.

Men account for 95 percent of maintenance debtors.

Under Polish law, failure to make alimony payments carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison.
