MEPs back rules opposed by Polish hauliers

The European Parliament will now start negotiations on the rules for international freight services with countries that are members of the European Union.

Polish transport companies fear they will be forced to pay employees more for working abroad.

Hauliers from Poland have said the rules would make them less competitive and generate red tape.

France and Germany, meanwhile, have complained that they are being undercut by their Central and Eastern European rivals in providing freight services.

Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported that Poland has the largest fleet of trucks used for haulier services in the European Union, and that the country stands to take the biggest hit under the new rules.
