Poland’s pensioners can expect regular annual cash boosts in the future if the ruling conservatives stay in power, the country’s prime minister said in a press interview published on Friday.

This year more than 9.7 million Polish pensioners are expected to receive extra cash under a new government package of benefits, according to a Cabinet minister.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told the Super Express tabloid in an interview that his government’s new “Pension Plus” initiative would continue in the future “if, of course, voters trust us and extend our mandate to govern” the country at the ballot box.
Poland’s political parties are gearing up for an electoral marathon, with European elections scheduled for May 26 and a national parliamentary ballot due in the autumn, followed by a presidential vote in 2020.
A total of PLN 10.7 billion (EUR 2.5 bn, USD 2.8 bn) worth of extra benefits will be paid out from public coffers in May as part of the government’s “Pension Plus” initiative, Elżbieta Rafalska, the minister for family, labour and social policy, told a news conference on Thursday.
The payouts are part of an ambitious new set of spending pledges unveiled by Poland’s ruling conservatives during a party convention in late February.
