Public broadcaster Polish Radio is pitching in to help the families of the miners who lost their lives in an explosion at a coal mine in the neighbouring Czech Republic.

Sunday was a national day of mourning in Poland, with the country reeling after 12 Poles were killed in a methane blast at the Czech coal mine.

Polish Radio has decided to donate all proceeds from commercials aired on Sunday to those who lost their loved ones in the disaster, executives have said.

CEO Andrzej Rogoyski said: "Regardless of how much we collect in this way—and this will probably be no small amount—all the money will go to the victims’ families.”

Top Polish and Czech officials have offered their condolences to the grieving families and promised financial help.
