'Hydrogen revolution' in Poland begins: parliamentarian

The members of the parliamentary group discussed the application of the green fuel in Polish industry and transport at an event accompanying the ongoing COP24 climate summit in the southern city of Katowice.

Sitarski said: “Poland is one of the greatest producers of hydrogen in the world.” He added that Poland is “developing legal conditions favourable to the growth of hydrogen infrastructure, while specialised technology and cars are already available.”

He said: “The Lotos refinery in Gdańsk alone generates 13 tonnes of hydrogen per hour, while coal miner Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa is capable of producing enough hydrogen to provide power to around 800 buses annually.”

It is estimated that one hydrogen-powered bus covering around 300 kilometres per day takes up some 8 kg of hydrogen per 100 km, PAP said.

The Lotos Group, which owns around 30 percent of the country’s wholesale fuel market, sealed a deal Friday on the co-financing of hydrogen-related projects from EU coffers.

The project is to construct installations recapturing hydrogen from its refinery and develop two refuelling stations for vehicles, which are to commence operation by the end of 2021.
