Propelled by robust economic growth, Poland is set to surpass fellow EU member Portugal in terms of GDP per capita next year, the Polish prime minister has said.

Speaking during a visit to New York, Mateusz Morawiecki said that Poland was swiftly increasing its prosperity and improving its position in the 28-nation European Union of which it has been a member since 2004.
"In 2019, our country should overtake Portugal in terms of GDP per capita,” he said at a conference in New York headlined Poland: The Can-Do Nation.
Morawiecki added: “We've overtaken Greece already and will be on our way to overtake Italy in the next five to 10 years.”
During his one-day visit to New York, Morawiecki clanged a bell to open Thursday’s session of the New York Stock Exchange and touted his country’s economic success story and government achievements during an interview on CNN International's "Quest Means Business."
At the end of his stay, Morawiecki met executives from some of America’s largest companies and financial institutions, telling them that Poland was a modern and dynamically developing country welcoming to foreign investment, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
Morawiecki has said in an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal that the Polish economy is booming and that the country’s ruling conservatives are pursuing a model of "inclusive growth" to create equitable opportunities for citizens.
