The number of jobless people fell below 960,000 in August, Labour Minister Elżbieta Rafalska said during an economic conference on Wednesday.

She added that the figure was a preliminary estimate subject to confirmation by the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS).

Rafalska was speaking at the Krynica Economic Forum in the southern Polish resort town of Krynica-Zdrój.

She said in July that unemployment in Poland was the lowest in 28 years.

According to the European Union's Eurostat statistics agency, which uses a different methodology, unemployment in Poland was a modest 3.8 percent in May, the fourth-lowest rate in the 28-nation bloc.
