Ryanair to reduce Irish, increase Polish staff numbers: report

Ireland-based budget airline Ryanair has announced it will cut employment in Dublin and hire new staff from Poland for its charter service, Ryanair Sun, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Up to 300 people may lose their jobs, but Ryanair has said it would offer existing staff jobs at other bases, including in Poland, according to IAR.
Meanwhile, Ryanair told Polish Radio that it was too early to say how many new jobs would be created in Poland, but IAR said Ryanair Sun, which flies Polish charter passengers, would double its fleet to ten next year.
Ryanair’s announcement was made amid a pilot’s strike which grounded flights to and from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Belgium, including about a dozen Polish connections.
Pilots and airline attendants want better pay and conditions, such as for Ryanair to cover the cost of their hotel stays and airport transfers when their work means they need to spend a night away.
But IAR reported that Ryanair said that a British pilot makes upwards of GBP 219,000 (PLN 1 million, EUR 245,000, USD 289,000) per year while a beginner airline attendant from Belgium earned GBP 22,500 per year. (vb/pk)
