It marks the day on which Poles worked enough hours and earned enough income to pay all their taxes for the year.

Last year Tax Freedom Day was June 9.

Andrzej Sadowski, head of the Adam Smith Centre, said Tax Freedom Day came earlier in 2018 because Poland's GDP is growing faster than public sector spending.

The Adam Smith Centre also urged the government to simplify Poland's tax system.

While the government has cracked down on tax fraud and evasion, Sadowski said the best way to combat such practices would be to simplify the tax system.

Sadowski also said that the government's complex changes to the tax system were making it more expensive to manage. (vb/pk)
