The tax would apply to products with high sugar, fat and salt content, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna said.

According to the daily, countries including Hungary, Britain, Spain and Mexico have already taken such a move to reduce the consumption of unhealthy food.

However, Polish food producers say a junk food tax can only work in highly developed economies, while in Poland it could limit access to certain products for many consumers, the daily reported.

It quoted experts as arguing that some countries, such as Belgium, have introduced special laws to limit fat, salt and sugar content in products instead of a new tax.

Legislation of this kind in Poland could prove more effective in improving health than tax measures, according to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.

The country’s finance ministry is consulting plans for a new tax with health ministry officials, the daily reported.
