The winners were picked out in a competition, now in its ninth year, held by the Solidarity trade union.

At a gala ceremony, Duda said that the awards are unique because employers’ names are put forward by employees.

The winners include large automotive companies operating in Poland such as General Motors and Volkswagen, but also schools and medical centres.

Duda said that in order to qualify for the awards, employers had to meet criteria such as "obeying the principles and regulations of labour law... observing health and safety standards and... partnership with trade unions.”
