Polish unions have voiced concern following news that German car manufacturer Opel has been bought by the French Groupe PSA, which manufactures Citroen and Peugeot cars, Poland’s rmf24.pl website has reported.

Opel employs some 4,000 people in two plants in southern Poland.
rmf24.pl reported that trade unionists will hold a meeting with workers as soon as they receive details of the sale. Unionists want guarantees that Polish workers will keep their jobs and existing contracts, the website added.
Opel was sold for EUR 2.2 billion, rmf24.pl reported, adding that the transaction will create the second largest carmaker in Europe, with a 17 percent share of the market.
The IAR news agency reported last week that Poland’s Finance and Development Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he was in touch with the head of Opel, a General Motors subsidiary, and the German and French finance ministers.
Morawiecki added that the Polish plants are efficient and would prove themselves should the deal go ahead, IAR added.
