Both Polish and Russian ports handled more than 2 million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) last year, dziennik.pl reported.
Poland handled 5,660 more than Russia, a slight gap but one that is set to increase, according to forecasts, dziennik.pl added.
Russian ports saw business fall in 2015 due to an economic downturn in China and an embargo on Russia. Russian trade was hit by the collapse of the ruble, which was reflected in imports, the website reported.
Rebound in business
It added that last year saw a rebound in business at Russian ports in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad. In Poland, mainly due to the Baltic port of Gdańsk, this happened faster than in Russia.
In October, container operator DCT Gdańsk, which belongs to the Australian Macquarie fund, launched its Terminal 2, a project which cost more than PLN 1 billion. Handling capacity doubled to some 3 million TEU, dziennik.pl noted.
