Pre-paid SIM cards used in Poland must be registered by 1 February under a recent anti-terrorism law, the Ministry of Digitalization has said.

The following day, unregistered cards will be turned off.

The new rules came into force under an anti-terrorism law adopted by parliament last year.

The aim is to make it more difficult for criminals, including anyone involved in terrorist activities, to remain anonymous.

Registration entails providing a telecoms operator with details such as the user’s name and social security number. Foreigners can give their passport or residence card number.

Most operators allow users to register SIM cards at their sales outlets, via the internet or through online banking.
