Gov’t to tax online shops?

The Law and Justice (PiS) could soon introduce a tax on online retailers, after announcing a similar move aimed at hypermarkets, the Rzeczpospolita daily reported.

According to Rzeczpospolita, the government intends to impose a sales tax to the approximately 20,000 online retailers currently operating in Poland.
The idea was applauded by members of the traditional retail industry.
However, e-commerce experts say that the tax could put Polish Internet companies in a very difficult situation.
“Polish companies will have to charge higher prices, which greatly reduces their competitiveness against foreign shops,” Monika Majewska from the Balladine.com clothing company told the daily.
It is estimated that this year Poles will spend approximately PLN 45 billion at online shops, an increase of over 20 percent over 2015. Sales tax alone is expected to bring in PLN 2 billion this year. (rg)
