Head of Poland's state railway operator quits

The head of Poland's state railway operator PKP has resigned after just two days amid media reports that he was registered by communist-era security services as a secret collaborator.

CEO Bogusław Kowalski said he had tendered his resignation “from a sense of responsibility for the trust placed in me, and not because of a sense of guilt".
“Being entered on the registers of the communist security services does not mean someone worked for those services,” he added.
Kowalski warned he would take legal action against anyone who defamed him.
The Infrastructure and Construction Ministry announced on Friday that Kowalski had been chosen to head PKP .
Kowalski is a former MP and was a senior official in the Transport Ministry. He has worked in the transport sector for over 20 years.
Poland’s new conservative Law and Justice government, which champions Catholic and patriotic values, has vowed to root out former communists and their sympathisers from public life. (pk/rg)
