The Polish capital was named one of the best Christmas shopping destinations alongside Paris, Sofia, Budapest and Bucharest.

The ranking, released by Britain's The Sun tabloid just weeks before the Christmas craze hits Europe, depicts Warsaw as a "city full of cosy bars and restaurants", and one which "really comes into its own at Christmas".

The authors behind the list recommend that tourists visit the city's three main markets: in the Old Town, Castle Square and at the foot of the Palace of Culture and Sciences, which will be up and running from 27 November until Boxing Day.

The article lists some of the staple dishes that visitors may come by in shops and bars in the holiday season, among them Polish gingerbread known as piernik, mulled beer, and jellied carp.

The Sun also points to traditional Christmas baubles, made from blown glass, as the perfect souvenir to take home. (aba/di/rg)
