Poland's Żubrówka tipped for world's top-selling vodka trio

The Russian group behind Poland's famed Żubrówka bison grass vodka has forecast that by the end of the year, the spirit will have entered the top three selling vodkas in the world.

In the most recent edition of the annual 'Millionaires' Club' ranking of vodka sales, which covers the year 2014, Żubrówka was placed sixth.
In 2010, 1.2 million 9-litre cases of Żubrówka were sold, whereas in 2014, the figure was as much as 5.2 million.
Żubrówka is made by Polmos Białystok, a company that belongs to the Central European Distribution Corporation (CEDC), which transferred from American to Russian ownership in 2013.
Chairman of CEDC Monzer Elabrashy told Poland's Puls Biznesu daily that by the end of the year, only Smirnoff and Absolut will be ahead of Żubrówka.
The vodka's distinctive flavour comes from Hierochloe odorata, known as bison grass or żubrówka in Poland. European bison in the Białowieża Forest of eastern Poland feed on the herb, and each bottle comes with a blade of the grass. (nh/rk)
