Warsaw applies for EUR 1 bln funds for metro extension

The City of Warsaw has applied to the EU for PLN 4 billion (about EUR 1 billion) for upgrading infrastructure, including extending the second metro line.

The plan is to build 3.4 km of new westbound track from Rondo Daszynskiego, with the planned stops including "Wolska," "Moczydło," "Księcia Janusza." To the east about 3.12 km of new track will be built.
According to the tender documents the construction of the new stations should take no longer than 38 months and could be completed by 2019. Warsaw announced the tender in October 2014.
The city has allocated PLN 3.174 billion for six new stations.
Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz said the money from the new EU budget would also be used on reconstruction of Wał Miedzeszyński and Żołnierska, Marynarska and Marywilska streets. The EU will finance 85 percent of these investments.
The capital is the first city in Poland to submit an application for the funds to the Ministry of Infrastructure.
Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, told journalists at one of the capital’s metro stations that Warsaw is the leader in attracting EU funds.
The city has been recognized as an integrated transport hub, meaning that ongoing road projects in the capital city will be linked with national transport routes. (jh/rk)
