Polish university wins international satellite competition

A team from the AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, has beaten 59 other university teams to win a major satellite technology competition in the US.

The CanSat competition is organized by both the American Astronautical Society and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, with sponsorship and some participation from NASA.
The competition used Burkett, Texas, as the launch location and the university teams came from numerous countries including the US, Canada, the UK, Turkey and India.
As part of the competition teams must design and build a ‘Science Vehicle’ which is sent 1km up into the air using a rocket, before being released and descending on a parachute.
During the descent the Science Vehicle must collect information about the atmosphere while remaining stable. Each team’s Science Vehicle also contained an egg and extra credit was given to eggs which returned undamaged.
Although rockets can be provided by the organizers AGH used one made for them by the Polish Rocket Society.
The Polish team passed the initial stages of the competition with scores of 97.6 percent and 99.2 percent, allowing them to reach the finals.
This was the only Polish team in the competition and it was also the first time that AGH’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics entered it. (sl/nh)
