OECD report describes pros and cons of Polish economy

The world has not been able to find its feel following the financial crisis, but Poland is faring a little better than its peers, says a recent report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The OECD360 – Polska2015 report (in Pollsh) presents an assessment of the issues that determine the quality of life of citizens in both economic and social terms.
It focuses on eight areas: education, employment, so-called green growth, regional perspectives, agriculture, growth, financial crisis and its consequences.
“Two years ago, Poland was the only OECD country which reported growth,” Adam Orzechowski from the Economy Ministry, told Polish Radio.
“We performed as a leader who did not quite know how it happened. Which mechanisms, in addition to the entrepreneurship of Poles, led to this situation,” Orzechowski said.
An asset of the Polish economy is its social mobility, Polish economy experts agreed.
“Today, the trump card is the mobility of Polish society,” said Professor Katarzyna Żukrowska from the Warsaw School of Economics.
However, a disadvantage is Poland’s lack of confidence and poorly developed infrastructure, Żukrowska said, who added high taxes on goods and services to the list. “These decide on competitiveness, but we did not think that much ahead,” Żukrowska added.
“Poland has [human capital] in a quantitative sense, and now we have to take care of its quality, and respectively invest in it,” Katarzyna Żukrowska explained. (rg)
