Gawlik commented in a statement that Poland is counting on the participation of Japanese technological expertise, describing it as a key factor in the ultimate decision on whether the plant will be built in Poland.

Japanese Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yosuke Takagi has confirmed that both the government and Japanese companies would back the endeavour.

As regards the realisation of the project to build a nuclear power plant in Poland, Japanese companies such as Hitachi, Toshiba, and Mitsubishi are very interested in this matter,” he noted.

In a bid to allay fears about Japan's 2011 Fukushima power plant disaster, Yosuke Takagi claimed that “these companies have the best and the safest technologies in the production of nuclear energy.

These technologies are already being used following the very tragic experience of the Fukushima nuclear power plant,” he noted.

Although the Polish government has wavered for several years on the matter, in September 2014, Poland's largest power firm PGE signed a preliminary agreement with three other companies about co-financing the project.

The four companies are due to confirm in 2017 whether they are still keen to push ahead, with construction potentially beginning in 2019. The prospective location has not been confirmed, although there is a short-list of locations neat the Baltic Sea. (nh)
