Polish astronomers without a base?

The end could be nigh for the Warsaw-based Space Research Centre, and the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (NCAC), whose headquarters have been returned to private hands.

The two organisations have claimed that the rent is now too high for them to operate from their current bases.

For now the scientists at the two institutions – who have worked on the MUPUS instrument to examine a comet, among others – are now working from shipping containers outside their former headquarters.

The Rzeczpospolita daily says that the plot which housed the offices is worth PLN 30 million (EUR 7.4 million). (rg)
