Poland is planning to become the European Union’s fourth-largest milk producer, Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki told a press conference on Wednesday.

“Poland is currently the fourth milk producer in the Union, behind Germany, France and UK,” Sawicki said. “Our aim is to take the third spot in Europe within two years.”

The EU lifted the quotas on milk production on April 1, which potentially opens the way to boosting output and internal competition.

Sawicki said the lifting of the milk quotas will also increase competitiveness of European producers on the global markets. The world’s largest producer is the United States with annual output of 91 million tonnes, while Germany, the EU’s biggest, is No. 5 globally.

Poland produces 12.7 million tonnes of milk a year behind the UK’s 13.9 million. (an)
