Crops represented around 52 percent of total agricultural output in the EU in 2014, with animal products accounting for 43 percent, with five percent for other products and services.

In Poland, the trend was slightly reversed with 47 and 51 percent of the industry dedicated to crops and animals respectively.

In terms of apples, Poland was the clear leader in 2013, according to the latest report by Euromonitor, with 3.1 million tonnes of the fruit grown last year. The figure was an impressive 26 percent of the EU total.

Poland was also close to the top of the leaderboard in cereal production. With 28.5 million tonnes grown in 2013, the country came third in terms of volume behind France (67.3 million tonnes) and Germany (47.8 million tonnes).

The UK tied with Poland as the second largest EU producers of poultry with around 1.7 million tonnes in 2013. (rg)
