Poland’s Defence Ministry is buying new equipment, already signing a contract for the purchase of 40 JASMM long-range missiles, and with talks in progress over buying 120 howitzer tank bodies.

The 40 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASMM) come at a price of 250 million US dollars, and have a range of 370 km (230 miles) when fired from aircraft such as the F-16 jet. The contract was signed Thursday at the military base in Krzesiny, near Poznan.

The purchase of the JASMMs – which are produced by Lockheed Martin at a unit cost of 1.3 million US Dollars – needed to be given the green light by Congress.

The Polish Army is also in discussions with a South Korean company for the supply of 120 tank bodies.

“Samsung Techwin Co. is set to sign a contract with Poland this month to export some 120 units of the K-9 self-propelled howitzers,” wrote Seoul’s Yonhap agency without naming sources.

The deal is said to have a “multi-million-dollar” value and will see Samsung Techwin exporting “only the body of the howitzer, with the final assembly to be made in Poland with its own turrets,” reports Yonhap. (rg/jb)
