“The first two quarters of this year demonstated that our food is still doing well in the European Union,” Andrzej Gantner of the Federation of Polish Food Producers said in an interview with Polish Radio.

Gantner noted that within the EU, Polish food exports have already increased by 15 percent compared with last year.

“This is better than expected,” he added.

Gantner says that most of the surplus that resulted from the Russian and Chinese embargoes on Polish pork was absorbed by EU markets.

He also noted that with the exception of pork, China is emerging as a promising market for Polish foodstuffs, while the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are becoming increasingly significant as importers of Polish dairy products.

Meanwhile, Spain is searching for increasingly competitive prices owing to its recession, a factor which has turned in Poland's favour.

As with 2013, the biggest importers of Polish foodstuffs are Germany and the United Kingdom. Gantner notes that the first six months of 2014 saw a dramatic rise in exports to Germany, in spite of the lack of promotional campaigns.

2013 was a record year for Polish food exports, with sales reaching 19.9 billion euros. (nh)
