“Until recently, rural tourism was neglected, but now we have a complete product that can be promoted both at home and abroad,” she said during a press conference at the Agrotravel Fair in Kielce, which finished over the weekend.

Sobierajska estimated that there are about 8000 agritourism venues nationwide, and the price of rural accomodation in Poland remains favourable compared with Western European alternatives.

The Central Statistical Office (GUS) found that growing numbers of foreigners are picking accommodation in Polish agritourism venues and private guest rooms across the country.

Of 41 nationalities listed as doing so, 26 saw an increase in numbers compared with 2012.

Wieslaw Czerniec, chairman of the Polish Federation of Rural Tourism, has introduced a voluntary system whereby proprietors can categorise their properties.

He believes that more should be done in this field, echoing the star system used by hotels, stressing that “this is the only way of guaranteeing quality of service.”
