Michal Marzec has noted that although the main phase of the expansion of the Warsaw airport will finish this year, it is necessary “to think in advance” about the next step.
Chopin Airport's state-run parent company Przedsiebiorstwo Panstwowe 'Porty Lotnicze' currently has stakes in 10 airports across Poland, including in Gdansk, Krakow, Poznan, Bydgoszcz and Rzeszow.
Options for an airport between Warsaw and Lodz had stalled owing to lack of funds. Another plan is to build an airport at Kielce.
Marzec said that if Poland wants to increase its air traffic, either it should build small airports surrounding Warsaw, following the example of London and Warsaw's new Modlin Airport, “or take a radical step and build a completely new airport.”
However, he warned that “technology could take such a leap forward, that flying techniques could change,” meaning that plans need to be laid carefully so that investments do not become redundant before costs are recouped.
The Chopin International Airport is currently completing a 1.5 billion zloty investment programme (357.7 million euro). Nevertheless, in spite of renovation works, it managed to cross what Marzec called the “magic number” of 10 million passengers in 2013, partly owing to construction problems at Modlin Airport. (nh)
