Eight bidders in running for Polish submarine contract

Poland's Armament Inspectorate has confirmed that eight international and Polish bidders are in the running for a contract to build three new submarines for the Polish Navy.

The deadline for submitting applications to take part in technical talks about the contract elapsed on Friday.
Spain's Navantia, Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, France's DCNS, and Sweden's Saab are among the companies due to take part in the talks.
A joint application was also filed by two other Swedish concerns (FMV Consortium and Cockums), as well as individual bids by French company Thales, Norway's Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace AS, and Poland's Kenbit.
As part of a modernisation programme of the Polish Navy, the Ministry of Defence aims to acquire two new submarines by 2022, and a further one by 2030.
The talks are due to begin in February 2014.
However, Poland's Armament Inspectorate has stressed in a statement that it reserves the right to invite additional companies that did not submit applications.
