The container ship, which is operated by Denmark's Maersk Line, stretches to an unprecedented 400 metres and is 59 metres wide and 100 metres high.

The Maersk Mc-kinney Moller, named after company's late founder, docked at Gdansk's Deepwater Container Terminal 1 (DCT).

Gdansk is the only port on the Baltic side of the Danish Straits that can manage a vessel of such size.

“The docking at Gdansk of the world's largest container ship is a landmark moment in the history of DCT Gdansk,” Dominik Landa, commercial director of DCT Gdansk told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

“It's an event which strengthens the status of Gdansk as a gateway to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Russia,” he said.

The Maersk Mc-kinney Moller will remain in Gdansk until 24 August. (nh/pg)
