With talks with potential investors still ongoing, councillors in Radom, around 100 kilometres from Warsaw, have voted through funds to keep its airport relaunch on target.

Councillors approved a supplementary 25 million zloty (5.7 million euro) for the project, which will see its military airport adapted to accommodate civilian flights.

Work began on adapting the airport in January 2012, and a prospective reopening date has been set for September this year.

According to Poland's Civil Aviation Authority, a new airport must demonstrate that it has enough funds to run the site for at least two years, before being granted a licence certificate.

At present, funds are still needed to construct a runway extension, as well as a new airport apron.

Councillors visited the site before voting through the supplementary money.

To date, funds for the airport have been provided solely by the city. Support had also been promised from regional authorities (Masovia province), but the funding fell through. (nh)
